Ebenezer J. Shields

Ebenezer J. Shields (born December 22, 1778 in Georgia , †  April 21, 1846 in La Grange , Texas ) was an American politician . Between 1835 and 1839 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

In 1809 Ebenezer Shields came to Tennessee, where he settled in Giles County near Lynnville . There he continued his training. Until 1827, Shields studied at the University of Nashville . After a subsequent law degree and his admission as a lawyer, he began to work in Pulaski in his new profession. Politically, he joined the opposition to President Andrew Jackson in the 1830s and became a member of the Whig Party, founded in 1835 .

Shields was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee between 1833 and 1835 . In the congressional elections of 1834 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the tenth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded Democrat William Marshall Inge on March 4, 1835 . After re-election, he was able to complete two legislative terms in Congress until March 3, 1839 . In 1838 he was defeated by the Democrat Aaron V. Brown . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Shields practiced again as a lawyer in Pulaski. In 1844 he moved his residence and law firm to Memphis . He died on April 21, 1846 near La Grange, Texas.
