James Houston Thomas

James Houston Thomas (born September 22, 1808 in Iredell County , North Carolina , † August 4, 1876 in Fayetteville , Tennessee ) was an American Democratic Party politician . He represented the sixth electoral district of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Thomas attended village schools and graduated from Jackson College in Columbia in 1830 . He then studied law , was admitted to the bar in 1831 and then began practicing as a lawyer in Columbia. He later held the office of Attorney General of Tennessee from 1836 to 1842 .

He was elected a Democrat in the 30th and 31st Congresses . In 1850 he ran unsuccessfully for the 32nd Congress , but was later elected to the 36th Congress . He served in Congress from March 4, 1847 to March 3, 1851 and later from March 4, 1859 to March 3, 1861. He also represented Tennessee as a delegate in the Provisional Confederate Congress . After the Civil War , Thomas resumed his practice as a lawyer in Columbia. He died on August 4, 1876 in Fayetteville and was buried in St. John's Cemetery in Ashwood .
