William Anderson

William Robert Anderson (born June 17, 1921 in Bakerville, Humphreys County (Tennessee) , †  February 25, 2007 in Leesburg (Virginia) ) was an officer in the United States Navy .

Life

He went through military training and rose to become frigate captain . As a specialist in nuclear submarines , he was in command of the first nuclear submarine , the USS Nautilus (SSN-571), from 1957 to 1959 . With her he succeeded on August 3, 1958, the first crossing under the North Pole .

After retiring from the navy, he became involved in politics. As an independent candidate, he finished second in the 1962 gubernatorial elections in Tennessee with 32.8 percent of the vote, behind the victorious Democrat Frank G. Clement . He joined the Democrats in 1964 and sat from January 3, 1965 to January 3, 1973 for the 6th Congressional Constituency of Tennessee in the United States House of Representatives . After the election defeat against Republican challenger Robin Beard , he withdrew from the public. He last lived in Alexandria, Virginia .
