Samuel E. Hogg

Samuel E. Hogg (born April 18, 1783 in Halifax , Halifax County , North Carolina , †  May 28, 1842 in Rutherford County , Tennessee ) was an American politician . Between 1817 and 1819 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Samuel Hogg attended the public schools in Caswell County . He then taught as a teacher for a short time. After studying medicine in Gallatin (Tennessee), he began to work as a doctor in Lebanon around 1804 . During the British-American War of 1812 he was a military doctor until 1815. Politically, Hogg was a member of the Democratic Republican Party founded by Thomas Jefferson . After his military service, he was elected to the Tennessee House of Representatives.

In the state-wide held congressional elections of 1816 he was elected for the second mandate of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , where he succeeded Bennett H. Henderson on March 4, 1817 . Until March 3, 1819, he was able to complete a legislative period in Congress . After leaving the US House of Representatives, Hogg practiced again as a doctor in Lebanon. In 1828 he moved to Nashville , where he continued his profession until 1836. After a brief stint in Natchez , he returned to Nashville in 1838. In 1840, Hogg became President of the State Medical Society of Tennessee . He died on May 28, 1842 and was buried in Nashville City Cemetery .
