William Landlord Vaughan

William Wirt Vaughan (born July 2, 1831 in Martha , Wilson County , Tennessee , †  August 19, 1878 at Alamo , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1871 and 1873 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

William Vaughan attended public schools in his home country and then studied at Cumberland University in Lebanon . After a subsequent law degree and his admission to the bar in 1860, he began to work in Brownsville in his new profession. Politically, he was a member of the Democratic Party . In the congressional election of 1870 Vaughan was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the eighth constituency of Tennessee , where he succeeded William Jay Smith on March 4, 1871 . Since he was defeated by the Republican David Alexander Nunn in 1872 , he could only serve one term in Congress until March 3, 1873 .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Vaughan returned to work as a lawyer. At that time he also got into the railroad business. As site manager, he played a key role in the construction of the line between Brownsville and New Bern in North Carolina . In 1878, Vaughan considered running again for Congress. He died during the election campaign on August 19, 1878.
