Edwin Hickman Ewing

Edwin Hickman Ewing (born December 2, 1809 in Nashville , Tennessee , †  April 24, 1902 in Murfreesboro , Tennessee) was an American politician . Between 1845 and 1847 he represented the state of Tennessee in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Edward Ewing was the older brother of Andrew Ewing (1813-1864), who also sat for Tennessee in Congress between 1849 and 1851 . After elementary school he studied at the University of Nashville until 1827 . After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1831, he began working in his new profession in Nashville. In the same year he became a board member of the University of Nashville. He held this position until his death.

Politically, Ewing was a member of the Whig Party . He was a member of the House of Representatives from Tennessee in 1841 and 1842 . After the death of MP Joseph Hopkins Peyton on November 11, 1845, he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC when the by-election was due for the eighth seat of Tennessee , where he had the current legislative term until March 3, 1847 finished. In 1846 he declined to run again. His tenure in Congress was marked by the events of the Mexican-American War .

After leaving the US House of Representatives, Edward Ewing practiced law again. After the Civil War , he became President of the University of Nashville. He died on April 24, 1902 in Murfreesboro at the age of 92.
