Terry Griffiths / Achievements
This list shows the sporting achievements of the snooker player Terry Griffiths . Griffiths from Welsh was a professional player between 1978 and 1997, winning 26 tournaments over the course of his career and making it to the finals of 30 others. His most important successes include winning the World Snooker Championship in 1979 , the Masters in 1980 and the UK Championship in 1982 , making Griffiths one of the few players to have won all Triple Crown tournaments at least once.
Griffiths, born in Llanelli , Wales , in 1947 , started snooker early and won his first local tournaments as a teenager. In the 1970s he was finally able to show several successes in addition to his professional career such as winning the Welsh Snooker Championship and winning the English Amateur Championship twice . As a result, despite the financial risk, he decided to become a professional player for the 1978/79 season.
To the surprise of many, Griffiths managed right in his first professional season to defeat numerous leading players such as Perrie Mans , Alex Higgins and Eddie Charlton at the Snooker World Championship and thus to reach the final, which he clearly won with 24:16 against Dennis Taylor . Less than six months later he was again in a Triple Crown final at the UK Championship , but was defeated by John Virgo 13:14 before he won the Masters 9-5 against Alex Higgins in 1980 .
After being placed directly in the top 10 of the world rankings thanks to his world championship title, he retired from several tournaments in 1982 despite continued successes, only to return to it by winning the UK Championship at 16:15 against Alex Higgins, which he also did as one of the first players ever to win all three Triple Crown tournaments. In the course of the following year Griffiths remained in the top of the world and reached the finals in numerous, mostly insignificant tournaments, such as in 1981 at the UK Championship and in 1982 and 1984 at the Masters. At the end of the 1980s, but Griffiths was again among the leading players when he was only in the 1988 World Snooker Championship against Steve Davis reached the final and with a 9: 3 victory over Wayne Jones in the same year for the third time the Welsh Professional Championship won . A year later he again reached the final of a ranking tournament at the European Open , but lost it 8: 9 to John Parrott , so that he started the new decade with sixth place, but fell out of the top ten ranks the following season.
But after a final defeat at the Scottish Masters 1990 and despite several good results and an associated, intermittent return to the top 10, Griffith's results gradually deteriorated. After he had taken part in all possible tournaments up to this point and was still ranked 23rd, he heralded the end of his career with only two tournaments during the 1996/97 season. He reached the final of a professional tournament at Seniors Pot Black for the last time, before ending his career after a 9-10 defeat by Mark Williams in the first main round of the World Snooker Championship in 1997 . Following this, Griffiths increased his commitment as a snooker trainer and also became a commentator for the BBC .

Especially in invitation tournaments, i.e. tournaments whose participants were invited by the organizer to participate and were therefore not accessible to all players, Griffiths was able to show a high number of finals with a total of 22, of which he was able to win eight. Four of these finals took place at the Masters , where he won in one case and lost the game in the other three cases.

Non-ranking tournaments
In so-called non-ranking tournaments, i.e. tournaments whose results were not included in the world rankings like those of the invitation tournaments and in which participation was also partially only possible by invitation, Griffiths reached a final 16 times, with seven wins less than half of them could win. Since the UK Championship was held as a non-ranking tournament up to and including 1983 instead of a world ranking tournament, these 16 finals include Griffiths' victory in 1982 and the two finals in 1979 and 1981.
