It belongs administratively to the Arrondissement of La Tour-du-Pin and is part of the canton of Chartreuse-Guiers (until 2015: canton of Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine ). The inhabitants are called Velannois .

Velanne is about 22 kilometers west-southwest of Chambéry . Velanne is surrounded by the neighboring municipalities of Pressins in the north, Saint-Jean-d'Avelanne in the north and northeast, Saint-Martin-de-Vaulserre in the east and northeast, Saint-Bueil in the east and southeast, Saint-Geoire-en-Valdaine in the South, Saint-Sulpice-des-Rivoires in the southwest, Montferrat in the west and La Bâtie-Divisin in the west and northwest.
