Villette-d'Anthon is a French municipality with 4936 inhabitants (at January 1, 2017) in the department of Isère in the region Auvergne Rhône-Alpes . The municipality belongs to the canton of Charvieu-Chavagneux in the Arrondissement of La Tour-du-Pin .
geography
The municipality is located in the extreme north-west of the Isère department. Villette-d'Anthon is located on the Rhone , near the mouth of the Ain .
history
After the conquest of Gaul, Julius Caesar had military posts built along the Rhône. The region was marked by several conquests. Initially, the area was owned by the Allobrogians , who lived here in the 1st and 2nd centuries BC. A Celtic burial mound can still be found in the hamlet of Asnières . This was followed by the dominions of the Burgundians , the Merovingians , the Carolingians and again a Burgundian rule. Then the area became the property of the Holy Roman Empire, before it passed to the Dauphiné and finally to the Kingdom of France. In the 17th century there were only a few houses around the church. The religious history is closely related to that of Chavanoz , since the priest there was also a priest of the Church of Saint Martin de Villette . There was also a chapel in Mons and Asnières . In the district of Sous l'Église there are also the remains of an old church. The place was - not only in name - strongly tied to the fortress city of Anthon . Thanks to its excellent location near the Métropole de Lyon , the village was not affected by the rural exodus. Since 1998 there has been an association in the village that campaigns for the rediscovery of the cultural heritage.
