Popularity in the Philippines
Development and filming
The original Mexican telenovela was massive hit in the Philippines with ratings peaking on 46.5%, when it first aired on Radio Philippines Network (RPN) in 1996. The series' success paved way to another Thalia telenovela Rosalinda which has the highest rating show ever recorded in the Philippine TV with a peak of 57.8%.
CBS had originally planned to only air one installment of The Amazing Race (Season 12) in the 2007-08 season, but due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, CBS ordered a 13th installment as a replacement for programs affected by the strike. CBS greenlit the 13th installment on December 9, 2007. Race locations were scouted in January 2008 and filming took place between April and May 2008.

Casting Marimar
GMA VP Wilma Galvante reveals it took some time to get the story rights of "Marimar" from Televisa, the owner of story rights of the Mexican Telenovela. Angel Locsin was the first choice to play the title role but she declined. The contract required that the Pinoy version be made before 2007 is over which prompted the network to give an auidition for the highly profiled role. GMA artist such as Nadine Samonte, Katrina Halili, Jennylyn Mercado, Marian Rivera, Valerie Concepcion, Bianca King, Rhian Ramos, Glaiza de Castro, Jewel Mische and Karylle have all went to the audition.

According to CBS, one team made "an unprecedented mistake that ultimately prohibit[ed] them from joining their fellow Racers at the finish line," thus making them the third team in the show's history—after Season 1's Joe & Bill and Season 4's David & Jeff—to not be present at the finish line.
The role eventually went to Marian Rivera, who had 80% chance of winning the role,

Prizes
After Sergio annuls his marriage with Marimar (though he is still secretly in love with her), Angélica is badly burned in a car accident and dies. In dire straits, Sergio marries a rich young woman, Inocencia, who despises Marimar. Inocencia later learns that she has a brain tumor, and after her surgery, she is so happy to be alive that she annuls her marriage to Sergio so he can be free to marry Marimar. They finally marry.

The Amazing Race 13 is the 13th installment of the reality television competition series The Amazing Race. It features 11 teams of two, each with a preexisting relationship, in a race around the world.

The series is part of the fall line-up for 2008-09 season and premiered Sundays at 8 p.m. ET/PT starting on September 28, 2008.[1][2]

Production

Development and filming

CBS had originally planned to only air one installment of The Amazing Race (Season 12) in the 2007-08 season, but due to the 2007-2008 Writers Guild of America strike, CBS ordered a 13th installment as a replacement for programs affected by the strike.[3] CBS greenlit the 13th installment on December 9, 2007.[4] Race locations were scouted in January 2008 and filming took place between April and May 2008.[5][6][7]

Filming for the The Amazing Race 13 lasted for 23 days and covered nearly 40,000 miles. The season spanned eight countries in five continents, and visited some far-flung locales never before seen on the show, including Bolivia, Cambodia, and Kazakhstan. Brazil, New Zealand, India, and Russia were also listed as race destinations.[8][9][10]

According to CBS, one team made "an unprecedented mistake that ultimately prohibit[ed] them from joining their fellow Racers at the finish line,"[11] thus making them the third team in the show's history—after Season 1's Joe & Bill and Season 4's David & Jeff—to not be present at the finish line.

Cast

Applications for The Amazing Race 13 were due on November 27, 2007. Semi-finalist interviews were held in December 2007 and January 2008 and final casting interviews took place in February 2008, in Los Angeles, California.

The cast featured a pair of fraternity brothers, a team of married hippies, and a separated couple hoping to reconnect while on the Race.[9]

CBS heavily promoted the new season, including placing advertising on the top of three hangar buildings at Los Angeles International Airport prior to the premiere.[12] Unlike other seasons, CBS has provided a location map to viewers of where the Race will be traveling prior to the start of the season.[13]

The Route of the Race (at the time of the filming)
One Detour choice in the first leg was to descend 240ft from the Elevador Lacerda (building on the left) via cargo net. Teams arrived at the Forte de São Marcelo (right) via boat for the Pit Stop.

Leg 1 (United States → Brazil)

The Detour was a choice between Hard Way Up or Soft Way Down. In Hard Way Up, teams emulated a religious ceremony by climbing the Escadaria do Passo on their hands and knees. At the top, teams were asked a "mystery" question ("How many stairs have you climbed?"). Teams would receive their next clue by answering correctly; if they answered incorrectly, they had to climb the staircase again. The correct answer was 53. In Soft Way Down, teams had to go to the top of the Elevador Lacerda (an outdoor elevator) and climb down a 240-foot-tall cargo net.

Additional tasks
 • At o Rei do Pernil, teams had to wheel a traditional vending cart to Praça da Sé in order to receive their next clue.

Leg 2 (Brazil)

The Detour was a choice between Beach It or Docket. In Beach It, teams had to travel to Pecém Beach and move a traditional Brazilian sailboat, known as a jangada, into an inlet by using logs to roll it. They would be given their next clue. In Docket, teams had to travel to nearby Porto do Pecém Template:Pt icon and search in a computer database for a specific ID number for a shipping container and then find the container to get their next clue. In this leg's Roadblock, one team member must find the name of their next destination on an advertisement painted on the wall of the park.

Leg 3 (Brazil → Bolivia)

The Detour was a choice between Musical March or Bumpy Ride. In Musical March, teams had to lead a marching band through the city to a band leader to receive their next clue. In Bumpy Ride, teams had had to ride a traditional wooden bicycle down a cobblestone road to receive their next clue. In the Roadblock, one team member had to learn six wrestling moves from female wrestlers called Fighting Cholitas. After performing these moves in the ring, they were given their next clue.

Additional tasks
 • At the statue of Simón Bolívar, teams had to get a newspaper and search it for their next clue.
 • At the hat shop, teams had to buy a traditional hat to get their next clue.
