Rayman 2: Revolution is an updated version of the original Rayman 2 platformer game developed by Ubisoft in 2001 for the PlayStation 2 (see 2001 in video gaming). The game stars Rayman along with his friends Ly the Fairy and Globox as he tries to collect all the Lums (parts of the world's core) and find all four masks. By doing so, he wakes up the sleeping god Pokolus who would then help him destroy Razorbeard and his robotic pirates that were enslaving the inhabitants of Rayman's world. Compared to the original, the updated game features a few minor enhancements and level revisions. Of these new features, the most significant upgrade was that many of 2D objects in the original version were now replaced with 3D models.

The Marshes of Awakening

While Rayman landed in the safe and peaceful Forest of Light, Globox landed in the dangerous, piranha-filled Marshes. Soon after landing, Globox was taken away to the Canopy, and Ssssam, a friend of Rayman and Globox, was captured and locked in a cage.

The Marshes of Awakening serve as a bridge between the Spirit World and the Real World. At the other end of the bog is the Guardian of the Cave of Bad Dreams. Although he is actually a Fire Crab wearing a magic top hat and holding a staff, the guardian rules over Polokus' nightmares.

Most of the Marshes is played in the form of waterskiing, in which Ssssam tugs Rayman to the other side. A new twist in Revolution is that a monster lurks beneath the waves. Of course, with the undead come Zombie Chickens, their first appearance in all Rayman 2 Versions.

Rayman doesn't have to go to the Marshes until after the Menhir Hills. The Marshes are found in the Marshlands.

The Sanctuary of Water and Ice

Rescuing Bzzit allows passage to the Lost Island, where the Sanctuary of Water and Ice is located. Pirates have constructed strongholds along the beach.

The Sanctuary itself is reached after two magic orbs are placed on their altars. The Sanctuary is a void of nothingness, supplemented only by a humongous water slide. Rayman must slide down the giant death trap while dodging all the pits to reach Axel, the first boss. The death of Axel rewards Rayman with a meeting with Polokus, and the first mask.

Globox's House

The second World Terminus in the Front is Globox's House, positioned atop a misty summit.

Areas include Skull Cave, Globox's House, and the Well.

The Menhir Hills

First on Rayman's list of objectives is to find Clark, who has gone into the Menhir Hills. The hills are characterized by the large amount of Walking Bullets, menhirs, and thorns. A Robo-Pirate Training Academy looms over the peaceful meadows. Rayman must come to the hills twice: once to find Clark, and once after getting the Elixir of Life.

The Cave of Bad Dreams

Located in the Marshes of Awakening, the Cave of Bad Dreams is where all of Polokus' nightmares--and bank accounts--go. Rayman must race against the guardian and his Fire Crabs to reach the ultimate prize. It is here where a moral is shown: Greed leads to Game Overs.

The Canopy

Found right behind Globox's House is a large tree trunk that is hollow. However, boulders are blocking the entrance. With the rescue of Clark, a Walking Bullet will appear in the Front. Riding it towards the boulders gains access to the Canopy, where Globox is being held prisoner.

The Canopy begins quiet, but turns into an uproar with the appearance of a Giant Spider that will infinitely chase Rayman until it dies or loses its prey. On his first visit Rayman is defenseless against the spider. Once Globox is saved, the spider will be conquerable. After escaping the spider, we find the vast pit below that must always be avoided, but calm plants and wildlife flock on the tree branches that make up the level. Globox must be freed, as only he can destroy the laser bars preventing access to Whale Bay.

Whale Bay

After the onslaught of the Warship, Whale Bay is pretty peaceful. With the help of a baby Globox, Rayman can reach the bay in the Well. Most of the level takes place in a Pirate Stronghold (at least half). The appearance of the Barrel Robo-Pirate is of notice, as is Carmen the Whale, a friend of Rayman's that is being held prisoner in her own bay. After freeing Carmen, she swims away and Rayman must follow her and get the air bubbles that coming from her. The level ends at a sailing ship that is stuck in the stones under the sea.

The Sanctuary of Stone and Fire

With Carmen and Globox now rescued, Rayman can call upon them for assistance in the Well. Across the bridge is a giant Thorn, which Carmen defeats. With the help of Globox, a plant grows, allowing Rayman to enter the nearby canyon.

The Canyon is usually referred to as the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire. Like the other sanctuaries, the sanctuary is actually located in an area. While the Sanctuary of Water and Ice was on the Lost Island, the two Sanctuaries of Fire lie in an unnamed, lava filled canyon. The Canyon has grassy foothills, rocky wasteland-like bottoms, and a huge river of lava. Plums are also a common sight. The Canyon is also the home of a Fire Crab. The level is designed to give you a feeling of adventure and discovering.

As in Rayman 2, Revolution includes both the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire and the Sanctuary of Fire and Lava. Unlike its predecessor, the PS version, this PS2 version enables access to the Sanctuary of Stone and Fire, which was an optional area full of Lums and Spiders. The music is remnsicent of the Tarentella, which featured a trilling lute, commonly heard fading in and out of the music.

The Sanctuary of Lava and Fire

Going with the non-PS versions, the Sanctuary of Lava and Fire still has its unmentioned name. umber is the guardian, and attempts suicide in a river of magma. The entire area consists of steering Plums away from magma on a river of lava and transporting Magic Orbs from bottomless pits to Umber's chamber.

Rainbow Creek

The final World Terminus in the Front holds the game's single completely new level, along with old levels taken apart into segments and mixed and matched. The Top of the World level is evidently absent from the game, the Chair Ride mini-game in Ly's House, and the Fortress being part of the Echoing Caves. The scenic cliffs have a dark mine inside.

Pirate Mines

A smaller version of the PlayStation version's Gloomy Island, the Reformatory was moved to the Iron Mountain level, leaving only the mines. Rayman finds Uglette, crying. She tells that Globox and the kids has been captured, and Rayman jumps up in a battle ship and go find them. He only saves the kids in the end.

The Precipice

Rayman uses a balloon to get to the cliffs where he is chased by the Pirate warship.

The Echoing Caves

When Rayman arrives here he is chased by the warship until he comes to a place where flying kegs can be used.

Beneath The Sanctuary of Lava

The hardest level in the game: First Rayman has to free one of Globox's children From a spooky tank named Boss Biditank. After that Rayman will encounter a lost temple where he fights a giant fly called Boss chenille

Finally Rayman has to go on until he finds a Teensie who opens a passage to The Sanctuary of Lava.

The Sanctuary of Lava

Ly gives Rayman the ability to fly. Fly across the passage to reach a battle arena where the guardian, Foutch is waiting. During the battle Rayman will lose the power to fly. But he soon defeats Foutch by bringing down 3 pillars on his head. After the battle Rayman will get the power to fly only over lava and The Third Mask.

Tomb of the Ancients

Rayman will fight Clark here who is being controlled by Razorbeard's cabin boy. After Rayman turns him good again Clark will give him a Lums radar and the 1000th Lum.

The Iron Mountians

When Rayman arrives here he will have to find a hot air balloon to travel to the Reformatry for Disturbing Children. Rayman rides a walking shell, plays around with gravity and frees 3 Baby Globoxes. Then Rayman will go up into the clouds to fight Grolem 13 and retrieve the final mask

The Prison Ship

Rayman slides his way though an obstacle course of speed and arrives in a place where he learns how to use flying shells. Finally Rayman rescues all the slaves from their cages.

The Crow's Nest

Rayman saves Globox and defeats Razorbeard at the end of the game.

Rayman's friends

Murphy

Murphy is a type of flying fairy frog who is always smiling, and acts as a guide. First appearing in Rayman 2, he has since re-appeared in other Rayman games, although in Rayman 3 he has a new voice actor, and his behaviour changes slightly.

Ly the Fairy

Ly the Fairy travels with Rayman throughout most of the game. She is the protecter of the heart of the world, wbut when robotic pirates abducted her, she scatters the heart of the world to protect them. She gives Rayman new powers during the game. She can be seen in Rayman: Hoodlum's Revenge, as a statue, although she does not have an active role in the game.

Globox

A life long friend of Rayman's. Returning in Hoodlum's Revenge, he has a wife named Uglette and 650 children, upon the last count. Although he has magic powers, with the ability to create a small cloud and make in rain upon doing a rain dance, he is at most times a burden to Rayman.
