Main character

Rayman is the protagonist and mascot of Ubisoft and represents an anthropomorphic cartoon character without arms and legs, but with hands and feet. The character was developed in 1992 by Michel Ancel .

Game worlds

There are two abstract game worlds: Rayman's home and the world of the god Polokus. These worlds are populated by different people and magical beings such as fairies, tribelles and small animals. There are both friendly beings who help Rayman in fights and recharge his powers, as well as opponents such as Mr. Dark.

In the first part of the series, Rayman has to find and destroy Mr. Dark and free so-called Electoons from cages.

These variants for portable consoles take over characters and scenarios from the main series. Content and graphics sometimes differ significantly from previously published titles of the same name.

  • 2000 - Rayman for Game Boy Color - 2D platformer, which roughly follows the story of the 1995 title, but has significant changes in design and music.
  • 2001 - Rayman 2: The Great Escape for Game Boy Color - 2D platformer that follows the story of the 3D parts.
  • 2003 - Rayman 3 for N-Gage and Game Boy Advance (supports the link cable to the GameCube) - standalone 2D platformer
  • 2005 - Rayman: Hoodlums' Revenge for Game Boy Advance - Jump-'n'-Run with isometric view.
  • 2006 - Rayman Raving Rabbids for Game Boy Advance - in contrast to the other Rayman Raving Rabbids ports, this is a classic 2D platformer in the style of Rayman 3 for the Game Boy Advance
  • 2010 - Rayman 2: The Great Escape for the devices iPhone and iPod Touch with iOS 3 to 11 (on the iPad only in "compatibility mode") and ported as Rayman DS and Rayman 3D to the Nintendo DS and Nintendo 3DS - 3D Jump- ' n'-run game
  • 2016 - Rayman Classic for iOS and Android

Raving Rabbids

The offshoot Rayman Raving Rabbids takes a different direction than the main series. Instead of a big jump-'n'-run game, the Raving Rabbids are more like party games that consist of many mini-games with a loose framework. A special feature here is the bizarre humor; Rayman uses z. B. a Klopömpelpistole - a weapon that Klopömpel fires as projectiles - to fight the rabbits. Furthermore, Rayman has to complete various crazy games like warthog races or cow throwing for the pleasure of the rabbits. The rabbits do not notice that Rayman can free himself from his prison with the help of the Klopömpel.

  • 2006 - Rayman Raving Rabbids for Wii - one of the few starting titles for Wii, which was designed with the new control via Wiimote in mind . All mini-games can be played with several players; but most of them are only played one after the other; simultaneous play is only possible with a few games.

The implementations for PlayStation 2 , Xbox 360 , PC , Nintendo DS , Game Boy Advance replaced the motion control with keystrokes, which, however, clearly lost the gaming fun of the Wii version, which is why these ports were not so successful.

Reviews

The Rayman series is very successful and has often received good reviews from critics. The PlayStation version sold over ten million times.

Television series

In 1999, the short-lived British-Canadian-French animated series Rayman: The Animated Series , directed by Laurent Jennet , appeared for the game . Originally, 26 episodes were planned from autumn 2000.

  • Episode 1: The Escape / The Lacmac Abduction (Lac-Mac Napping)
  • Episode 2: Parker (No Parking)
  • Episode 3: Fear of Heights (High Anxiety)
  • Episode 4: Grub's Rendezvous / Rendezvous With Difficulties (Big Date)

The production was sponsored by the government of Québec . But due to lack of money and the bad scripts, the series was discontinued during the creation of the fifth episode (My Fair Lac-Mac) , which has not yet been published . In addition, the series was only published and distributed in a few countries in the world, including in Germany on VHS and in France also on DVD. A making-of is also included. In 2003 the episodes were broadcast twice on Super RTL .
