George Martin Stephen, Ph.D., is the current High Master (headmaster) of St Paul's School, London. He is also an author. His wife, Mrs Jenny Stephen, is the headmistress of South Hampstead High School.

Education and training

He was educated at Uppingham School in Rutland, England, and at the University of Leeds, where he obtained his BA degree in English and History, followed by a Ph.D. from the University of Sheffield. From there Stephen moved into teaching, becoming headmaster of The Perse School Cambridge, then High Master of Manchester Grammar School, where he focussed on widening access to the school by increasing bursaries for the children of less wealthy families. In 2004 he moved to St Paul's, which will celebrate its 500th anniversary in 2009. He has served as Chairman of the Headmasters Conference.
