Giacomo Biffi

Giacomo Cardinal Biffi (born in Milan on June 13, 1928). Appointed an auxiliary bishop there in 1975, in 1984 the sudden death of Enrico Manfredini of Bologna opened the way for Biffi to become Archbishop there, and he was elevated to Cardinal-Priest of Ss. Giovanni Evangelista e Petronio in the consistory of 1985. He retired from the archdiocese in December 2003, being succeeded by Carlo Caffarra.

In 2000, Cardinal Biffi told a Bologna conference that the Antichrist was alive, a prominent philanthropist promoting the ideas of ecumenism, vegetarianism, and pacifism, although he declined to name an individual. [1]

Cardinal Biffi also once stated that the Italian government should favour Catholic immigrants to offset the number of Muslim immigrants and protect Italy's "national identity [2]."

Biffi was one of the cardinal electors who participated in the 2005 papal conclave that selected Pope Benedict XVI. According to a leaked diary, he received one vote on the fourth ballot. Cardinal Biffi lead the Spiritual Exercises for the Lenten retreat of Pope Benedict XVI, the Roman Curia, the Papal Household, and other Vatican offices. He again made comments reffering to the anti-christ.
