Career highlights

John Chiles (born October 91988)[1] is an American football player. He plays college football for the University of Texas Longhorns.

High School

Chiles attended Summit High School in Dallas, Texas where he was coached in football by Kyle Geller. He was a prep All-American and two-time district 4-5A MVP who was also a four-time honor roll student. During his four years in high school, he was a starter for three years; at both quarterback and wide receiver. In his final two years in high school, he totaled 2,036 yards passing, 694 yards receiving, 1,248 yards rushing. He was invited to play in the 2007 U.S. Army All-American Bowl.[1]

Chiles was a highly touted recruitt out of high school. ESPN and Dave Campbell listed him on their top recruits list.[1] Athlon Sports listed him at wide receiver position and ranked him the 31st best recruit in 2007.[2]

Besides playing football, Chiles also lettered three years in basketball and two years in track and field.[1]

Chiles graduated from high school early and enrolled in the University of Texas at Austin in January 2007; that qualified him to join the team for practices in the spring. As a true freshman with the 2007 Texas Longhorn football team, Chiles made his first college appearance in the first quarter of a game against the Rice Owls. He came onto the field beside starting quarterback Colt McCoy and then McCoy trotted out to a slot receiver position. Chiles never looked to pass; he ran up the middle for no gain. He came out of the game after that play and came back in the third quarter as McCoy's replacement. On that drive, Chiles lined up in the zone read offense and led the Longhorns 80 yards to a touchdown, carrying the ball 4 times for 49 yards.[3] He also threw one incomplete pass (one of two he threw in the game) and handed off to Vondrell McGee three times for thirty-one yards..[4] Redshirt freshman Sherrod Harris came in to replace Chiles for the final two drives of the game.[4] Chiles' strong performance immediately led to media speculation as to how the Longhorns can get him more playing time..[5][6]

During his freshman year with the 2007 Texas Longhorn football team, Chiles played in seven games and was named one of UT’s Outstanding Offensive Newcomers. He completed one pass for 17 yards and carried the ball 36 times for 191 yards and two touchdowns. In his first appearance he carried the ball nine times for 72 ards, including a 23-yard game. Against the Kansas State Wildcats he was the Longhorns' leading rusher with 58 yards on nine carries.[1]

In the 2007 Holiday Bowl Chiles led Texas on two touchdown scoring drives.[1]
