Edison Cavani is an Uruguayan football striker. He was born on February 14, 1987 in the city of Salto in Uruguay, and currently plays for Premier League club West Ham United.

Club career

Nicknamed El Matador,[2] Cavani moved to Montevideo when he was 12 years old, and came through the youth system at Danubio F.C. to make his debut for the first team in 2006. He was part of the Apertura 2006 championship winning squad.

After his breakthrough at the 2007 South American Youth Championship, several teams were suggested to have interest in signing Cavani, including Juventus and AC Milan[3]. However, on January 29 2007, Palermo chairman Maurizio Zamparini announced the signing of the promising Uruguayan footballer[4]. The bid was officially confirmed on January 31.[5].

Cavani made his debut on March 11 2007 in a home league match against Fiorentina [6], coming on in the 55th minute with his team 0-1 down and scoring an impressive equaliser only fifteen minutes later, a goal hailed as reminiscent of Marco van Basten's strike in the 1988 UEFA European Football Championship final.[2]

International career

In January 2007, Cavani was selected to join the Uruguay national football team Under-20 squad to play in the 2007 South American Youth Championship in Paraguay. Cavani finished the tournament as top scorer with seven goals in nine games, helping Uruguay to finish in 3rd place, earning them a place in the World Youth Championship.

On February 6 2008, Cavani made his first senior appearance for the Uruguay national team, and immediately scored a goal in his debut with the Celeste, a 2–2 tie with Colombia.[7]

On September 1 2008, at 23.52 Cavani signed for West Ham for a figure of £13 million, after completing a medical. He is expected to take the number 14 shirt.

Personal life

Cavani is of indigenous and Italian descent, his paternal grandparents being originally from Maranello.[8]
