The Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors (ドラゴンボールZ 舞空闘劇, Doragon Bōru Zetto Bukū Tôgeki) series is a series of fighting games based on the popular anime series Dragon Ball. The first game, Dragon Ball Z Supersonic Warriors was developed by Arc System Works and released for the Game Boy Advance on June 22, 2004. The game was followed by the 2005 sequel, Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 for the Nintendo DS.

Gameplay

The characters Son Goku and Frieza battling on the Planet Namek stage in the original Supersonic Warriors. The blue bars at the top left and top right indicate each character's hit points, while the percentages show how much energy each character has to perform energy blasts and Certain Kill abilities.

The games pits two characters of the Dragon Ball franchise against each other in large environments, where they mostly fight in the air. The player can use strong and weak variations of close combat attacks, and charge their ki to fire strong and weak energy blasts. Each character also has three unique "Certain Kill" abilities that deal heavy damage to the opponent. The Certain Kill ability varies depending on where the player is located - above, below or horizontal to the opponent.

Both games also feature tag team options, which allow up to three characters on each side to fight against one another.

History

Supersonic Warriors

Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors (ドラゴンボールZ 舞空闘劇, Doragon Bōru Zetto Bukū Tôgeki) is the first game in the Supersonic Warriors series. It was developed by Banpresto and released for the Game Boy Advance on June 22, 2004. The game was followed by a 2005 sequel, Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 for the Nintendo DS.

Supersonic Warriors 2

Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors 2 (ドラゴンボールZ 舞空烈戦, Doragon Bōru Zetto Bukū Ressen) is the second game in the Supersonic Warriors series. Supersonic Warriors 2 is a direct sequel to Dragon Ball Z: Supersonic Warriors and was developed by Cavia and published by Atari. It was released in 2005 for the Nintendo DS.

Characters

The games feature many characters from the Dragon Ball franchise. Each character has her/his own attacks, sprite, and attributes from the anime; for example, Majin Buu slowly recovers health over time. In Supersonic Warriors, all characters have three separate "levels" of power, with each subsequent level giving the character more strength and endurance, and in some cases, new sprites and attacks. In Supersonic Warriors 2, this system is dropped in favor of individual characters, who each cost an individual amount of Dragon Points (DP). In the list below, the characters of Supersonic Warriors and Supersonic Warriors 2 are listed. In the case of Supersonic Warriors, if a character has more than one form (ex: the level 1 character is different from the level 2 character) then said alternate forms will be listed.

Reception

Most reviewers praised the game for its team based structure, new story mode scenarios, and improved graphics. Large criticisms included the touch screen barely incorporated and the game being too similar to the first Supersonic Warriors.

  • Game Vortex- 8.8
  • IGN- 7.5
