"The Unforgettable Fire"
Song

"The Unforgettable Fire" is the second single from U2's 1984 album of the same name. Unlike the passionate "Pride (In The Name Of Love)", it was a textured, atmospheric piece, put together by producers Brian Eno and Daniel Lanois.

The inspiration for the song came from an art exhibition of the same name by victims of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki.

"The Unforgettable Fire" made its live debut at the fourth show of the Unforgettable Fire Tour on 2 September 1984 in Auckland. It was subsequently played at almost all Unforgettable Fire Tour shows, often fifth in the setlist. On the first European leg of the tour, "MLK" was placed immediately before it in the setlist and this pairing lasted for the rest of the live career of "The Unforgettable Fire". It was played at a considerable majority of Joshua Tree Tour shows, though its use saw a sudden decline in the tour's final month. This decline continued on the Lovetown Tour, with "The Unforgettable Fire" appearing at approximately every third concert. Its final performance ever was on 6 January 1990. However, it has not been entirely forgotten by the band: it was used as the outro music after the band left the stage at their concert filmed for U2 Go Home: Live from Slane Castle on 1 September 2001, as the song was recorded at Slane Castle.
