Slane Castle ( Irish Caisleán Bhaile Shláine ) is a castle near the Irish town of Slane in County Meath . The castle was built on a hill overlooking the valley of the River Boyne and is just a few kilometers downstream from the place where the famous Battle of the Boyne took place. Slane Castle is about a mile west of the village of Slane.
History of the castle
The castle in its current neo-Gothic form dates from 1785 and was rebuilt under the rule of William Burton Conyngham together with his nephew, who later became 1st Marquess Conyngham , by renowned Irish architects such as James Gandon, James Wyatt and Francis Johnston. Thomas Hopper was responsible for the design of the Gothic ballroom. In 1991 a devastating fire destroyed the entire eastern part of the castle facing the river. The fire caused great damage and it took a 10 year renovation program to rebuild the castle. Slane Castle has only been accessible again since 2001. Today the castle is the seat of the Marquesses Conyngham , the current owner is Henry Conyngham, 8th Marquess Conyngham .
