Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix is a computer and video game that is based on the fifth installment of the popular Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling and the film adaptation. The game will be released for the Wii, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 2, PlayStation Portable, Nintendo DS, Game Boy Advance, and PC.[1] It is set to be released on June 25 or June 29.[2]

The theme of the game is to explore Hogwarts and follow the story from the book and movie. However, unlike prior games, this time the adventure will be a sandbox style game, similar to GTA and Bully, in that Hogwarts is fully explorable most of the time, and there are "discovery points" that provide rewards to the player, which can be activated by completing side missions. Furthermore, there will be battles between group of students, as shown in the game trailer.

A press release made by EA Games on November 21, 2006 gave an idea of what the game will be like. The Wii version will also utilize the Wiimote's motion sensor when casting spell, and its pointer to move objects around.

Despite not returning to her role as Angelina Johnson in the film version of Order of the Phoenix, due to her commitments playing Chelsea Fox in EastEnders, Tiana Benjamin has recorded her voice for parts of the game.[3]

Controls

With an interview with IGN the creator said;

Game Controls Harry is now a pretty competent wizard and so his magic is not just getting stronger but also more varied. We've dramatically increased the number of spells he can cast, which has allowed us to create much more varied gameplay. We've also enhanced the way the player casts spells. I've never seen Harry Potter cast a spell by pressing a button on his wand - he paints a shape in the air with his wand and the magic flies out. So we've given this experience to the player by giving them direct control of Harry's wand arm, using the right analog stick on PS2 and Xbox360, the Wiimote on the Wii and of course the SixAxis control on the PS3. If you want to push something away, you move the analog stick forward, flick the Wiimote forward or move the SixAxis towards the screen. It's really cool, very natural and makes casting spells a much more magical experience!

Trivia

  • 85 locations have been added to Hogwarts (Combining the movies, blueprints, J.K. Rowling's drawings and books together to have a better hogwarts experience), direct from the movie blueprints, along with other important locations such as the Ministry of Magic, Grimmauld Place and Little Whinging
  • The are 60 missions for the gamer to complete (such as saving innocent students from the hands of Slytherin bullies)
  • The gamer can interact with over 90 characters
  • EA have recorded over 13,000 lines of dialogue with 22 of the movie’s actors and actresses

EA said they could not include everything (although they very much wanted to!), in particular:

  • The ability to swap between characters
  • The taking of OWL examinations (although these will be accessible on the portable consoles)
  • Quidditch/Flying
