Mehrabad International Airport (Persian: فرودگاه بین‌المللی مهرآباد) (IATA: THR, ICAO: OIII) is an airport that serves Tehran, Iran. It remains the primary airport of Tehran but will soon be replaced by Imam Khomeini International Airport that was completed in 2004, although the exact date of the change has been postponed several times. It is located much closer to the city center than Khomeini Airport.

Airport Tax at Mehrabad Airport

Airport tax for every Iranian Passport holder, as of year 2005, has been changed. The fee, regardless of age, is 150,000 Rials for the first time in a year (starting from Farvardin 1st, equivalent to March 21st, and ending the last day of Esfand, equivalent to March 20th)and 200,000 Rials for the second time or more. Note that this is for flights to most of the European countries. However, the tax is more for a couple of European and other countries. The previous fee was less and also, if a family member was on the same passport under a certain age, no fee was required.

  • On 20 April 2005 a Boeing 707-3J9C had an accident while landing in Mehrabad airport. After touchdown on runway 29L problems with the undercarriage (failure of a landing gear or tyre burst) caused the Boeing 707 to slide off the runway into the Kan River. Three passengers were killed after they fell in the river during the evacuation.
  • On 19 June 2005 a Northwest Airlines DC-10 en route from Mumbai to Amsterdam made an emergency landing at Mehrabad Airport due to an indication of a fire in the cargo hold, which turned out to be a false alarm. No American airliners had landed in Iran since the revolution. The plane left 8 hours later without incident.[1]
