Programs

California Miramar University was established as Pacific Western University (California) in February 1977. Currently, California Miramar University offers Associate, Bachelor, and Master degrees in six programs,[3] including Business Administration, General Studies, Public Administration, and Leadership Management. The university also engages in joint study programs with Vietnam National University, Hanoi [4]. These programs are conducted at the graduate level [5], in particular for the MBA program [6]. The university also conducts business school programs in Hong Kong, Taiwan, and China [7].

Academic Credit

The University evaluates and awards academic credit based on guidelines recommended by the American Council on Education. ; Council for Advancement of experiential Learning; New York Board of Regents Program on Noncollegiate Sponsored Instruction; Defense Activity for non Traditional education; American College Testing; Graduate record Examination; and most credit sources as recognized by major Universities. California Miramar University is not accredited[8][2] by any accreditation agency recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation (which is the agency that recognizes the accepted accreditation agencies in the US). As such, its degrees may not be acceptable to employers or other institutions. In some jurisdictions the use of degree titles from the university may be restricted or illegal. [1][9] Jurisdictions that have restricted or made illegal the use of credentials from unaccredited schools include Oregon [2][10], Michigan[11], Maine[12], North Dakota[10]New Jersey[10], Washington[2][13], Nevada[2], Illinois[2], Indiana[2], and Texas.[1]. Many other states are also considering restrictions on unaccredited degree use in order to help prevent fraud. [14]

Operations

Pacific Western University operated in the Brentwood, California suburb of Los Angeles for its first twenty years, and then moved to Westwood, California where it remained until relocating to San Diego, California in January 2006. According to Inside Higher Education, the school changed its name to distance itself from past controversies. .[15] The name change to California Miramar University happened in approximately March or April 2007.

PWU California and PWU Hawaii,[16][1] are two different entities.[2] CMU (PWU California) is not associated with PWU Hawaii. [15] PWU Hawaii was sued in 2005 by the State of Hawaii. [16] On May 9, 2006, the First Circuit Court of Hawaii entered a Default and Final Judgment against PWU Hawaii.[17] The judgement dissolved the university's corporate status, and effectively forced it to cease operations. It must be noted however, that although the university operations were dissolved, all degrees awarded by the university prior to its dissolutions remain to be legal in many states. [17][18]
