Among female artists she is only behind Barbra Streisand (71 .mil) and Madonna (63 .mil). Soundscan reported that Mariah Carey sold 49.9 .mil albums within the years 1991-2007, making her the 3rd best selling artist of the Soundscan era.

By 2000, Mariah had sold 60 .mil albums in the United States, which at that point, made her third after Barbra Streisand, Madonna.
