WKTV is the NBC television affiliate for Utica, New York and surrounding areas including Rome, New York (in the Syracuse TV market via a Nielsen quirk) and parts of the Albany, Binghamton and Watertown markets. It is licensed to Utica and its transmitter is located just east of Utica to provide adaquate spacing to co-channel WGRZ Buffalo. The station is currently owned by Smith Media.

WKTV also controls "WBU", the cable-only WB affiliate for the Utica market.

History

WKTV signed on the air in 1949 on channel 13 with a sole NBC affiliate (rare for the time in a market Utica's size). In 1958, WKTV moved from channel 13 to channel 2 in a dial realignment which had WKTV and the channel 13 in Hamilton, Ontario switching channel positions to add a channel 13 in Rochester and to relocate a UHF there in Albany. By the late 1970s, WKTV was sold to Harron Comunications, owner of a chain of cable companies in the Northeast and also owner of WMTW in Portland, Maine.

Smith Media acquired WKTV from Harron in 1993 after Harron purchased the cable system in Utica (now part of Adelphia, pending takeover by Time Warner).

WKTV pre-empts Last Call with Carson Daly from NBC in favor of Seinfeld reruns at night. After that, it unfortunetly (gulp!) (gasp!), signs off the air at 2:05am! Dont panic, it resumes broadcasting at 5:00am. This makes WKTV one of a few stations to still sign off at night (others include WREX, WXOW, WYTV, and all stations in Guam.).
