United Kingdom teams

For the first time since the qualifying tournament for the 1972 Summer Olympics, the United Kingdom national football teams (formally known as "Great Britain and Northern Ireland", almost always referred to as "Great Britain") will compete at the Olympic Football tournament. This has caused some controversy, as the Scottish, Welsh and Northern Irish football associations have disassociated themselves from the team, citing the danger that the home nations' separate footballing identities might be threatened by competing together as Great Britain.

The Great Britain women's team will compete at the Olympics for the first time.
