Revision as of 16:11, 11 October 2008

This page is for discussing:

  • the project, its aims, achievements and directions
  • general page style and layout issues
  • content issues which affect several pages

It is not intended for:

  • specific page content issues
  • as a substitute for the talk pages of individual articles, including that of the main Bristol article

However, you may post alerts and links to such conversations here.

Engravings

I've added an 1873 engraving, and details from it, to Bristol, History of Bristol, Colston Hall (Where it shows things destroyed by the fire, no less]], Bristol Cathedral (may want to move them around: One shows it before construction was complete, but I put it in the gallery, next to other discussions of same), and Blackfriars, Gloucester. Hope you like them! Stitching and cropping was provided by WP:GL/IMPROVE Adam Cuerden talk 19:52, 23 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

FAC Buildings and architecture of Bristol

I've put Buildings and architecture of Bristol up as a Featured Article candidate - any comments/votes etc welcome at: Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Buildings and architecture of Bristol. — Rod talk 11:11, 27 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol Doors Open Day 2007

I've just been reading in Venue about the Bristol Doors Open Day 2007 which happens on Sat 8th Sept (with some sites also open on Sun 9th) details are at: http://www.identitydesign.co.uk/bdod2007/index.htm. Is anybody able to get along to get more info on any of these (most already have articles, but many are stubs) and possibly take some photos? - I'd be particularly grateful if anyone could get snaps of Clifton Pool and The Victoria Public House (aka Clifton Lido) and the Underfall yard for the Bristol Harbour article - but I'm sure there are loads of others where the wikipedia article could be improved.— Rod talk 20:48, 29 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I was planning on going out and taking a few piccies, but I've been a little bit unwell lately, so I'm not sure if I'm going to feel like it now. I'll see how I feel on the day. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 12:35, 31 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

? reasses Bristol Cathedral article

Could someone reassess the Bristol Cathedral artcile - it's currently rated as "start" & I think it is more of "B" class & I'm considering putting it up for GA soon. I shouldn't do it as I've been too involved in editing the article.— Rod talk 14:33, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Definitely worthy of a B-Class rating. I think that the Media section probably falls under WP:TRIV and should be removed before being put up for WP:GA, and it looks like it could do with a few more references, although I haven't checked all of them so I could be wrong about that. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 14:47, 4 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Article importance

Now that the current stats on the project page are automated, I think it would be a good idea to add an importance rating to our articles (via Template:Bristol) so that we can see which articles are the most urgently in need of improvement. Firstly, does anyone else think this is a good idea, and secondly, how would we decide which importance level to assign. My thoughts are:

I'm sure that there's plenty of stuff I've left out, but that's just my initial thoughts on the subject. Any other ideas are welcome. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 10:18, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I would agree that this would be a good idea & most other projects have it - however it would be a lot of work re-evaluating the 600 odd articles. Importance level will always be a subjective & imprecise things & I think you've made a good start. if it is incorporated into the project page, then others can add or remove examples as appropriate.— Rod talk 14:02, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I've set up the categories, and edited the template so that it accepts an importance rating. At the moment it adds the article to the relevant importance category, but it doesn't display the importance in the template. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 19:54, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks - but the importance category doesn't show up in the status box on te project page - any idea why? We also need to do some instruction (similar to your list above) on the project page to help people do the importance categorisation.— Rod talk 21:27, 6 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
The stats on the project page are updated by a bot, so hopefully the importance ratings should appear on there next time it runs. I'll start working on a draft set of instructions later on. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 06:13, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]
They've now been updated. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 08:41, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, I've created a draft version at Wikipedia:WikiProject Bristol/Assessment. Feel free to make any changes/additions you see fit. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 07:45, 7 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Fry family (chocolate)

The article Fry family (chocolate) has been proposed for deletion. The Talk page notes that the article is supported by the Bristol wikiproject. It would be good if the article included more on the contribution of the Frys to the economic and cultural development of Bristol. Vernon White . . . Talk 19:21, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Nomination has now been withdrawn. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 19:40, 13 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol potentially losing GA status

Some work needs to be done on Bristol for it to keep its GA status. Notes on what needs to be done have been left by a user at Talk:Bristol#GA on hold. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 07:06, 18 September 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol area articles

At the moment we still seem to have quite a few articles about areas of the city that are so short that there's not really much point in them existing. Taking my inspiration from User:Mark999's excellent work on Kingsweston, I propose merging all area stubs into the article about the council ward that they are in and creating a redirect from the original article location to the relevant section of the ward article. This would avoid having articles like Filwood Park, and help to pad out articles like Hillfields, Bristol. Any thoughts? — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 08:59, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Seems like a reasonable approach to me. The articles can alwasy be recreated later if there is significant content to go into them.— Rod talk 09:54, 15 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Right then, I've had an attempt at doing this to Ashley, Bristol. I've merged in the stub articles on Montpelier and part of St Andrews, written a brief paragraph on Baptist Mills and linked to the longer articles about areas of this ward. Does this look ok to you? — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 09:30, 31 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Can you check this is OK? --Quentin Smith 15:24, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Buildings and architecture of Bristol still on FAC

Buildings and architecture of Bristol is still a candidate for Featured Article status having been nominated on 27th August! It received very little comment until recently & now has 3 support comments (& no oppose). It will soon fall off the bottom of the list and will not be passed as FA without a few more support comments. If you felt like making a comment at Wikipedia:Featured article candidates/Buildings and architecture of Bristol that would help the process.— Rod talk 20:22, 16 October 2007 (UTC)[reply]

New articles

I've added a new section to the project page for new articles. When anyone here creates a new Bristol-related article it can be added to the list so that other project members can give them the once-over and add them to thier watchlist if they want. — Gasheadsteve Talk to me 21:38, 26 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Photographs of Bristol Crown/County Courts

If any Bristol-based photographers could take snaps of courts in their neck of the woods (e.g. Bristol Crown Court and Bristol County Court) and add them to commons:Category:Courthouses in the United Kingdom, the photographs would be very much appreciated for Bristol Crown Court, List of courts in England and Wales and List of county courts in England and Wales. Hakluyt's memorial tablet in Bristol Cathedral

If any member of this WikiProject is able to take a photograph of Richard Hakluyt's memorial tablet in Bristol Cathedral for the article about him, that would be much appreciated. If required, please continue this discussion on the article's talk page. Thanks. — Cheers, JackLee talk 18:12, 2 May 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol Temple Meads

Bristol Temple Meads railway station is currently rated B-class, but recent edits have probably moved this close to GA. Before I turn it over for a formal assesment, perhaps members of this project would like to take a look and see what else needs doing. Geof Sheppard (talk) 16:02, 6 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bristol in Schools Wiki

As a Bristolian (mum still lives on Stoke Hill) I would be keen to see some more Bristol articles in the wikipedia for schools. At present the ones we do have are linked from Bristol. There is a big update going on at present. Any suggestions? The 2006 and 2007 editions have over a million users... --BozMo talk 13:20, 19 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Would you be able to take a photograph of someone in Bristol?

I am trying to obtain a photograph of Richard Lynn, and he is happy for a Wikipedian to take one of him at his residence, but I need to find someone in Bristol to take the shot. If you are at all interested please let me know on my talk page and I will provide further details. Thanks. Richard001 (talk) 01:17, 28 June 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Changes to the WP:1.0 assessment scheme

As you may have heard, we at the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial Team recently made some changes to the assessment scale, including the addition of a new level. The new description is available at WP:ASSESS.

  • The new C-Class represents articles that are beyond the basic Start-Class, but which need additional references or cleanup to meet the standards for B-Class.
  • The criteria for B-Class have been tightened up with the addition of a rubric, and are now more in line with the stricter standards already used at some projects.
  • A-Class article reviews will now need more than one person, as described here.

Each WikiProject should already have a new C-Class category at Category:C-Class_articles. If your project elects not to use the new level, you can simply delete your WikiProject's C-Class category and clarify any amendments on your project's assessment/discussion pages. The bot is already finding and listing C-Class articles.

Please leave a message with us if you have any queries regarding the introduction of the revised scheme. This scheme should allow the team to start producing offline selections for your project and the wider community within the next year. Thanks for using the Wikipedia 1.0 scheme! Project Stub?

I'm relatively new to wikipedia editing, but thought I'd try and create a page on Broad Street, however it looks like I might end up with a stub length article about what locals call the "Grand Hotel" (official the Thistle Grand). I was wondering if there was a box I could put on the page to mark it as a Bristol related stub?

NullofWest (talk) 17:01, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

If you add {{Bristol}} to the talk page of the article it will add this wikiproject banner. The instructions for the other parameters have been archived at: Wikipedia talk:WikiProject Bristol/Archive 1#Talk page template but basically add |class=stub within the project banner. If you just post the article title here I'm sure someone will take a look & help both with the assessment & the article itself.— Rod talk 17:30, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks Rod, I've been having trouble finding enough references, so the article I've created is at User:NullofWest/Broad Street,Bristol for now. Not sure if I should add the project box yet. NullofWest (talk) 17:57, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I would create the article in the mainspace, copy & pasting what you've done & then add banner to talk page.— Rod talk 18:30, 2 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Done now, I've been unable to find secondary sources on the "Grand" so that hasn't made it into the article yet. At the moment I've rated it Mid-Importance on the project scale as the source says it was one of the original streets, but think this may mean it needs to be High-Importance. The article is at Broad Street, Bristol NullofWest (talk) 08:07, 3 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Articles flagged for cleanup

Currently, 658 articles are assigned to this project, of which 86, or 13.1%, are flagged for cleanup of some sort. (Data as of 14 July 2008.) Are you interested in finding out more? I am offering to generate cleanup to-do lists on a project or work group level. See User:B. Wolterding/Cleanup listings for details. More than 150 projects and work groups have already subscribed, and adding a subscription for yours is easy - just place the following template on your project page:

{{User:WolterBot/Cleanup listing subscription|banner=Bristol}}

If you want to respond to this canned message, please do so at my user talk page; I'm not watching this page. --B. Wolterding (talk) 17:43, 6 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Wikipedia 0.7 articles have been selected for Bristol

Wikipedia 0.7 is a collection of English Wikipedia articles due to be released on DVD, and available for free download, later this year. The Wikipedia:Version 1.0 Editorial Team has made an automated selection of articles for Version 0.7.

We would like to ask you to review the articles selected from this project. These were chosen from the articles with this project's talk page tag, based on the rated importance and quality. If there are any specific articles that should be removed, please let us know at Wikipedia talk:Version 0.7. You can also nominate additional articles for release, following the procedure at Wikipedia:Release Version Nominations.

A list of selected articles with cleanup tags, sorted by project, is available. The list is automatically updated each hour when it is loaded. Please try to fix any urgent problems in the selected articles. A team of copyeditors has agreed to help with copyediting requests, although you should try to fix simple issues on your own if possible.

We would also appreciate your help in identifying the version of each article that you think we should use, to help avoid vandalism or POV issues. These versions can be recorded at this project's subpage of User:SelectionBot/0.7. We are planning to release the selection for the holiday season, so we ask you to select the revisions before October 20. At that time, we will use an automatic process to identify which version of each article to release, if no version has been manually selected. Thanks! For the Wikipedia 1.0 Editorial team, SelectionBot 22:56, 15 September 2008 (UTC)[reply]

My personal initial view of the matter is that we should use the diffs in the following list. It would be best to discuss here before we copy to the bots list. I have also included diffs for articles that I think should also be included - in most cases it is the current diff, but in the case of the Bristol article it is the last diff with the dialect included. There is a October 20th Deadline, I propose to submit my list to the Selection Team on October 18th at 09:00 UTC unless there are any objections - but it would be better if we could get consensus by then. NullofWest Fill the Void 16:11, 11 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
