Universidade Atlântica

The Universidade Atlântica, in english Atlântica University or Atlantic University, is portuguese private university located near Taguspark in Oeiras, in the former Barcarena Gun powder factory (Fábrica da Pólvora de Barcarena). The University was distinguished with Oeiras Medal of Merit.[1]

History

Atlântica, started in 1996 and by the initiative of university professors, researchers, banks, private companies and Oeiras Town Hall.

Atlântica is administrated by E.I.A. - Ensino, Investigação e Administração S.A., an entity created in 1993 with the purpose of founding a new Higher education institution in Portugal.

In 1996 the first undergraduate programs in the fields of Management started. In 2001 was created a Higher School of Health Sciences (Escola Superior de Saúde). Since then, Atlântica was enlarged its scientific interests in to four strategic teaching and research areas: Management, Health science, Computer science, and Territory, Environment and Development.

The present Rector of Atlântica[2] is Professor Nelson Lourenço[3], a sociologist with expertise in Environmental issues.
