Carrasco International Airport (IATA: MVD, ICAO: SUMU) is the largest airport in Uruguay. It is located north of Ciudad de la Costa in the Canelones department, in close proximity to (and east of) the capital city of Montevideo, which it serves. Ciudad de la Costa is the name of the city where the airport is located, which extends into eastern Montevideo. The Carrasco International Airport serves more than 1,500,000 passengers each year, and by 2010 it is projected to serve more than 2,800,000 passengers. In 2003, the government transferred the administration, operation and maintenance of the airport to a private investment group.

This airport presently charges users an Airport Improvement Fee.

The jetway at the airport have glass walls which provide a spacious and modern feel. However, there is only a single jetway at the airport. It is quite common for a plane to be loaded using passenger buses. All arriving flights, even those which use the jetway, still transfer passengers to the immigration and arrival lounge via shuttle bus.

On 3 February 2007 construction began on a brand new, modern, US$134 million dollar terminal that will be located parallel to Runway 06/24. The new terminal, designed by Uruguayan architect Rafael Viñoly, will have car parking with capacity for 1200 vehicles, and is scheduled to open in early 2009 and will not replace the current terminal. A new US$7 million dollar cargo terminal is also being constructed.

Runway 06/24 has been improved and lengthened to 3200mts, which allows the airport to operate non-stop flights to the both the U.S. and Europe.
