Álútur is a 481 m high mountain in the southwest of Iceland . The mountain is located about 6 km north of the municipality of Hveragerði .
Grensdalur volcano
Álútur belongs to the Grensdalur volcanic system and is its highest point at 481 m. There are a number of fumaroles on its slopes . a. can be seen well from the Hringvegur on the Kambabrún slope . The valley of Grensdalur, also known as Grænadalur or Grænsdalur, with its high temperature area is about 2 km west of it.
Hiking opportunities
The Álútur is also a popular hiking destination. You can z. B. from the swimming pool ( Sundlaug ) in Hveragerði follow the valley of the river Varmá to the north. At the Agricultural College ( Garðýrkjustöð ) you pass another high-temperature area on the slopes of Reykjafjall . It belongs to the same volcanic system as the high temperature area near the church of Hveragerði. Then you cross the golf course and climb up from the Sauðá valley .
A longer hiking trail from Lake Úlfljótsvatn to Hveragerði also leads over Álútur.
