Life

Ángela Ruiz Robles was born in 1895 to Feliciano Ruiz and Elena Robles. Ruiz Robles became known for her invention of the "Mechanical Encyclopedia". She worked as a teacher and from 1959 as headmistress and became known for her inventive talent. In 1925 she received a special award for her selfless commitment, which was given on the initiative of her fellow citizens.

Between 1938 and 1944, most of a total of sixteen of her academic papers were drafted, edited and republished, which mainly dealt with the shorthand and orthography of the Spanish language. This also included her project to create a scientific-grammatical atlas to present Spain with its grammar, syntax, morphology, spelling and phonetics.

In order to relieve the children of the weight of their school books, to make learning more attractive and to be able to better adapt the lessons to the level of each student, Ms. Ruiz designed a device in 1949 consisting of coils as well as text and light rails with which every kind of Fonts could be created. On December 7, 1949, she was granted the Spanish patent number 190.698 for her first draft of the “Mechanical Encyclopedia”. In 1962 she designed a prototype that was produced under her direction in the Parque de Artillería in Ferrol. This device, which is considered a pioneer of the e-book, is currently on display in the State Museum of Science and Technology ( Museo Nacional de Ciencia y Tecnología ) in A Coruña .

Description of the mechanical encyclopedia

Opened, the device consists of two parts: on the left is a series of automatic alphabets in several languages. With a light press of a button the letters can be put together to form words, sentences, tasks or topics and any kind of writing. Above the alphabet is a spool with various technical drawings and on the left another spool with ornaments and figures. Below the alphabet is a plastic template for writing, working and drawing. The lower part includes a housing for storing study subjects. Using the automatic reels on the right and left, where the desired books are attached, the compartments can be made visible and the reels can be stopped as required. The device can be used both upright and horizontally on a table. All parts are interchangeable and when folded, the device is the size of a normal book.
