Árni Matthías Mathiesen (born October 2, 1958 in Reykjavík ) is an Icelandic politician ( Independence Party ) and was Minister of Finance of Iceland between 2005 and 2009 .

Life

The son of the former minister Matthías Mathiesen studied veterinary medicine at the University of Edinburgh until 1983 . He then specialized in marine animals and obtained a Master of Science degree in fish pathology from the University of Stirling in 1985 . In the following years he worked as a veterinarian. In 1991 he became a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing , to which he belonged until 2009, initially for the Southwest constituency , and since 2007 for the southern constituency . In 1999 he became Minister of Fisheries and in 2005 he moved to the Ministry of Finance. On February 1, 2009, Steingrímur J. Sigfússon succeeded him as Minister of Finance.
