The spiked centaury ( Centaurium spicatum ) is a plant from the family of the Gentian family (Gentianaceae).

description

The centaury is an annual or biennial plant that reaches heights of 10 to 55 cm. The plant is bare and branched upright from the base or center, with a decrepit basal rosette of broad-shaped leaves. The numerous stem leaves are oppositely seated, elliptically elongated and have 3–5 nerves. The upper stem leaves are lanceolate.

In contrast to other species of the genus Centaurium , the flowers are sessile and stand in rising, somewhat one-sided, spike-like leafy inflorescences . The flowers are 12-14 mm long. The pink crown consists of 5 spread out tips about 4.5 mm long. The calyx with its teeth is as long as the corolla tube.

Flowering time is from June to September.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 22.

Occurrence

The eared centaury is common in the Canary Islands and the Mediterranean area and spreads east to Central Asia. Salt marshes, moist dune valleys and cultivated land are preferred as locations.
