Ängsholmen is an island belonging to Sweden in the Stockholm archipelago .

location

It is the second largest island in the Fjäderholmarna archipelago and belongs to the municipality of Lidingö . Ängsholmen stretches from southwest to northeast over 380 meters with a maximum width of about 150 meters. The island is forested and built on with several buildings.

history

Ängsholmen consisted of two islands until the beginning of the 20th century. The eastern one was called Lillholmen or Ireland. The western island was called Storholmen or Skottland (German: Scotland). In the course of the land uplift , however, both islands have grown together today.

In the 19th century, a Russian ship on which cholera broke out is said to have been quarantined in the area of the island . Some of the dead were buried on the island. However, the exact location of the graves is unknown. In 1849 the city of Stockholm acquired the archipelago and with it the area of today's Ängsholmen. The Ängsholmen area was used to dispose of sewage. This led to considerable unpleasant odors in the area around the island. Sewage disposal was discontinued at the end of the 1880s. There was a quarantine station on the island from the end of the 1880s to 1917.

From 1918 to 1976 Ängsholmen was part of a restricted military area. From 1982 the island was under the Royal Djurgården Administration (Kungliga Djurgårdens Förvaltning). The island has been part of the Royal National City Park since 1995 .

Cultural monuments

Immediately to the east of the island, at a depth of up to three meters, lies a 28-meter-long and 8-meter-wide wreck of a sunken ship. To the north of the island is another shipwreck with a length of 15 meters and a width of 5.5 meters at a depth of 16.5 meters. Both wrecks are below the waterline.
