The branchy Zwenke is a perennial grass that grows 20–60 centimeters high and which develops numerous subterranean runners. The shoots often last more than one growing season. The stalks are 10-65 centimeters high. The gray-green stem leaves are arranged in two rows. The ligule is 1 millimeter long, blunt and ciliate. The awn of the lemma the upper flowers is from 0.7 to 3.4 millimeters long.

The flowering period is April to July.
