École normal de Rufisque

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The École normal de Rufisque was a teacher training institution for girls from French West Africa in Rufisque in Senegal . It existed from 1938 to 1958.

history

The École normal de Rufisque was founded 35 years after the prestigious École normal William Ponty for boys as its counterpart for girls. Run by the colonial administration, the teacher training college offered the highest level of education girls could get in French West Africa. The first director of the school was from 1938 to 1945 the French Germaine Le Goff.

Girls between the ages of 13 and 20 from all over French West Africa were admitted. In the beginning there were a particularly large number of schoolgirls from the southern colonies such as Dahomey and few directly from Senegal. The training lasted four years. The girls were only allowed to speak French to each other and wore school uniforms they had made themselves. A boarding school was attached to the school. During the school year from November to July, the girls were separated from their families. The school year graduation celebrations were celebrated by the Rufisquoises together with the Pontins from the boys' school.

A total of around 800 female students graduated from the École normal de Rufisque during its existence from 1938 to 1958.

The school building that has been preserved has housed the Lycée Abdoulaye Sadji since 1972 .

curriculum

The aim of the École normal de Rufisque was to train teachers for elementary schools as well as to educate future wives of more highly educated African men. Especially in the first years of its existence, the school was strongly oriented towards the French educational goals of the 19th century.

In the 1950s, the École normal de Rufisque could be completed with a Baccalauréat .
