life and work

Campardon first completed training at the École nationale des chartes . Later he worked as an archivist at the same institution. From 1857 to 1908 he worked at the French National Archives , where he headed the “section judiciaire”.

At the beginning of the 20th century Campardon published the Quatrains et Souvenirs d'un archiviste (memoirs of an archivist). In this rare book, intended for his own circle of friends and acquaintances, he presented funny and cheeky biographies of archivists of the 19th century.

In addition to his historical research on the pre-revolutionary period, Campardon was particularly known as a music historian for the same period in France. He also wrote the following works relating to contemporary music and the music scene of the time:

  • Les spectacles de la foire (1877)
  • Les comédiens du roi de la troupe italienne (1880)
  • L'académie royale de musique au XVIIIe siècle (1884, biographical encyclopedia of the Paris Opera)
