Etienne-Hyacinthe de Ratte

Étienne-Hyacinthe Ratte (* 1722 in Montpellier ; † 1805 there ) was a French mathematician , astronomer and encyclopedist .

Live and act

Ratte studied mathematics and became secretary of the Académie de Montpellier at the age of 21 . In 1743 he made studies on gravity and successively published numerous papers on scientific questions.

Ratte also wrote a number of contributions to the Encyclopédie on physical subjects, such as froid , glace , gelée .

Although Ratte pursued diverse scientific interests, he devoted himself mainly to astronomy . In this discipline he made a large number of observations, for example the transit of Venus on June 6, 1761.

In the last years of his life he wrote about the history of the Histoire de l'Académie royale de Montpellier from its origin to the events of 1789.

In 1796 he was accepted into the Académie des Sciences in Paris.
