Étienne de Flacourt (* 1607 in Orléans ; † June 10, 1660 outside Lisbon ) was a noble naturalist , historian and geographer .

Life

From 1648 to 1655 Flacourt held the post of governor of Madagascar for the French East India Company . Here he first restored order among the French soldiers who had mutinied. His negotiations with the people of Madagascar were less successful. Her intrigues and attacks preoccupied him throughout his tenure. In 1655 Flacourt returned to France. Shortly afterwards he was appointed general of the East India Company and went back to Madagascar. While driving home from there, Flacourt drowned on June 10, 1660 near Lisbon.

Flacourt was the most important chronicler of Madagascar of his time. Historiography attributes the second or third occupation of the island of Réunion in the Indian Ocean to him.
