Ívar Ingimarsson (born August 20, 1977 in Reykjavík ) is a former Icelandic football player . The central defender and 30-time national player was active in England from 1999 until his retirement in 2012 and played briefly in his home country before that.
Athletic career
Ívar Ingimarsson developed in his Icelandic homeland towards the end of the 1990s, first with Valur Reykjavík and later with ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar, to become one of the most promising talents in the country and after 90 league games in October 1999 tried his hand at the English fourth division club Torquay United . On his debut against the then leaders FC Barnet , he scored a goal to a 2-1 win and the month-long test in English football resulted in a permanent position at third division club Brentford in November 1999 . By the end of the 2001/02 season Ívar was an integral part of the central defense of the "Bees", played 113 league games for the club and then moved one league up to the Wolverhampton Wanderers . In the team that succeeded in promotion to the Premier League in the 2002/03 season, he was only used sporadically, played the last games of the season from February 2003 on loan for league rivals Brighton & Hove Albion and then moved in October 2003 on to the second division FC Reading .
Together with Ibrahima Sonko , Ívar, who had strong headers and tackles , formed one of the best central defensive groups in the Football League Championship under coach Steve Coppell . After almost three years, Ívar succeeded with the "Royals" the first league promotion in the club's history, which was rewarded in October 2006 and later in July 2007 with a new three-year contract. Ívar spent two years with Reading FC in the Premier League and after another second division season in 2008/09 he was promoted to captain by the then newly hired coach Brendan Rodgers . At the end of the 2009/10 season, Reading FC extended the contract for a further year with Ívar Ingimarsson, who had now accumulated over 250 competitive games for the club.
Icelandic national team
Ívar Ingimarsson played a total of 30 times for the Icelandic national football team between 1998 and 2007 .
