The 1050 series was a two-frequency locomotive of the ÖBB . This locomotive was built in 1957 because at that time 50 Hz technology, originating from France, was beginning to gain a foothold in rail operations. It was an experimental locomotive of which only one example was built, based on the mechanical part of the 1141 series built at the same time .

In order to be able to prove the suitability of this technology, a short section of the route from St. Veit / Glan to Villach was set up, switchable for 16 2/3 and 50 Hz. From May to July 1957 the 1050.01 was also used on the Höllentalbahn in Germany. There it drove from Offenburg to Freiburg im Breisgau at 16 2/3 Hz and then further at 50 Hz. Instead of the prescribed 63 tonnes, the 1050 could even carry 95 tonnes on the 8 km long 55 per mil ramp. After returning from Germany, the 1050 was stationed in Vienna West and served from there on the route to Passau .

In 1973, the 1050.01 was formally withdrawn and technically adapted to the 1141 series to replace the 1141.03 that had crashed. The locomotive has been preserved as 1141 003 (II) and is now on display as an exhibit in the Augsburg Railway Park .
