The 5080 series diesel multiple unit of the ÖBB was a parallel development of the Uerdingen rail bus .

history

The Austrian rail vehicle manufacturer Simmering-Graz-Pauker AG (SGP) tried in the mid-1950s with this vehicle to face competition from the German Uerdingen rail buses and built two railcars and two matching sidecars. The vehicles were first tested at the GKB , but where they did not correspond, so that in 1956 they had to take over the ÖBB according to the customs of the time. The construction of the vehicles was based primarily on bus construction and could not prevail. Because of the problems with the vehicle, series production of this series was not possible. Instead, the ÖBB purchased the 5081 series from 1964 . On May 22, 1973, it was withdrawn from service due to the need for repairs and problems in obtaining spare parts.

The area of application of the railcar was regional traffic on branch lines including the Gutensteinerbahn and the Almtalbahn . This series was used on the Almtalbahn from 1964.

technology

The car body of the SGP rail bus was similar to the Uerdinger rail bus, but it was an in-house development by SGP: a 280 HP motor type S8B of the SGP series S with an opening angle of 180 ° drove via a clutch, as well as a 5-speed manual transmission type Mylius and an axle reversing gear to a gear set.
