The series 5099 is a meterspuriger cog railway - railcars of ÖBB , which was built in two copies. In 2006, the two vehicles were taken over by the SKGB and have been called VTZ21 and VTZ22 ever since.
history
In the 1960s, the ÖBB tried to switch to diesel operation on their two rack railways - the Schneebergbahn in Lower Austria and the Schafbergbahn in the Salzkammergut .
In 1964, two four-axle narrow-gauge railcars were purchased. The first test drives took place on the Schneebergbahn. They were then transferred to the Schafbergbahn, where they were used together with the steam locomotives .
The Schafbergbahn was taken over by Salzkammergutbahn GmbH in 2006 , since then the multiple units have been referred to as VTZ 21 and 22.
construction
The lightweight railcars consist of a welded frame that carries the machinery below the floor and the box body. The passenger compartment has 78 seats (arrangement 2 + 3). Large windows allow a good view. The railcar is supported on the bogies . Johann Benda , designer at the manufacturer SGP, was responsible for the design . The railcars were cream-blue with a silver roof, the new paint scheme of the SKGB is white-red with a red roof.
technical features
An eight-cylinder diesel engine from SGP is located under the passenger compartment . Power is transmitted via a torsionally flexible coupling and a cardan shaft to the torque converter, from there via an SGP rear-mounted gearbox and final drive to the two Abt gear wheels in the bogie on the valley side by means of cardan shafts. The railcar has a hydrodynamic service brake, a spring-loaded brake and a band brake.
commitment
The vehicles 5090.01 and 02 were usually used in pairs at the ÖBB. At the SKGB, they were used as a reserve for peak traffic times and special events or in the event of a steam train failure, and were shut down in 2012 and 2013 after engine damage. As a result, the VTZ 21 was cannibalized as a spare parts donor, and after a general inspection in the summer of 2014 , the VTZ 22 was able to be put back into operation for its 50th anniversary.
Whereabouts
In November 2014, VTZ 21 was transferred to Hollabrunn , where it serves as a creative center for students at HLW Hollabrunn.
