The ÖBB 5144 was an internal combustion engine series of the ÖBB .

After many BBÖ VT 42 and BBÖ VT 44 were no longer operational after the end of the Second World War due to the effects of the war and the construction of new diesel multiple units did not seem possible at short notice due to the destroyed workshops, it was decided due to the urgent need five control cars , which were originally for the VT 44 series had been procured to be converted into railcars using replacement parts from BBÖ VT 44.

The engine and transmission also came from the VT 44 series. The railcars, however, differ in some details from the VT 44: The control cars used were slightly longer and differed in appearance. The box is made of steel and the passenger compartment offered space for 64 people.

The five railcars were put into operation from 1951, initially they were called VT 44.50-54. In the ÖBB numbering scheme from 1953, they were given the numbers 5144.01-05.

Initially, the 5144 was used in high-speed traffic, but its area of responsibility gradually migrated to branch line service. Their main areas of application were in the greater Vienna and Wiener Neustadt areas including the Waldviertel and Weinviertel .

From 1979 onwards, improvements that were still urgently needed were made to reduce noise pollution for the driver, and new boilers and new front windows were installed.

The planned use of the VT 5144 ended in May 1991 on the Siebenbrunn – Engelhartstetten local railway due to the new acquisition of the VT 5047 . The two remaining railcars were then placed in reserve in Vienna North. 5144.003 was in use for a few days in August 1991 as a replacement for a failed 5145 multiple unit between Laa an der Thaya and Mistelbach. It was not until February 1, 1993 that the 5144.04 was the last of its series to retire from planned service and has since been used as a museum vehicle.

A further 5144 are still preserved as exhibits, such as 5144.01 as a memorial at Semmering station and 5144.03 at the Sigmundsherberg Railway Museum .
