The Ghegadenkmal on the grounds of the Semmering train station in Lower Austria was erected in honor of the engineer Carl Ritter von Ghega .

history

On April 3, 1869, Hofrat Wagner von Wagensburg, in his role as head of the General Inspection for Railways, approached the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects with the proposal to erect the first monument to Carl Ritter von Ghega on Semmering. The reason for this request was a meeting of the Association of German Railway Administrations in Vienna, which included a tour of the Semmering Railway .

14 railway companies took part in the fundraising process initiated to finance the project  .

According to the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects, the architect Bayer and Ritter von Schwarz undertook the design and construction management of the monument. According to Dehio , the architectural design comes from Heinrich von Ferstel , who, according to the magazine of the Austrian Association of Engineers and Architects, was only a member of the committee that was responsible for the decoration of the fairground.

The Ghegadenkmal was unveiled on July 22, 1870. On the occasion of the celebrations for the 150th anniversary of the Semmering Railway (2004), the monument was completely renovated.

layout

With the center of the neo designed -forms Ghegadenkmals is a created by sculptor Pönninger medallion from bronze with a larger than life view of the head of Carl von Ghega. This representation has been inserted into a white marble slab , by a Doric is framed pair of columns, which simultaneously transmits a gable beams and in this way aedicula forms, which is seated on a stone bench.

The background of the aedicula is a porch built from ashlar stones, closed at the top with a parapet and flanked with pilaster strips opposite the lining wall .

Ghega Foundation

The remainder of the donations for the construction costs of the Ghega monument was brought into the specially established "Ghega Foundation". This foundation should benefit needy students of the Technical University in Vienna .
