The series 5045 and 5145 of the ÖBB are express train diesel multiple units built in the 1950s, which became known as the Blue Lightning .
history
Between 1952 and 1956, the Simmering-Graz-Pauker company in Vienna built 12 of the 5045 series. Four more units from a canceled export order for Yugoslavia were later taken over by the ÖBB and designated as series 5145. The 5045 were technically adapted to the 5145 by 1970, among other things the distinctive roof structure for the engine cooler was omitted . Further modifications concerned the windows: The front, originally with four angular windows, was converted to three or four rubber-framed windows (both versions were available until the end) and translating windows were installed instead of the sunk windows on the side .
commitment
For the time being, the vehicles were primarily used in international and national express train traffic, where they became particularly well known as express railcar trains (TS) Venezia between Vienna and Venice and Vindobona Vienna - Praha - Berlin . For many years they also drove the express connections between Vienna and Villach and between Vienna and Graz . As more and more main lines were electrified over the years, the railcars were used more and more in regional traffic, most recently in the 1990s in the Lower Austrian Weinviertel, for example on the route to Drosendorf . In 1997, the last 5,145 retired from planning service.
Several vehicles have been preserved as museum pieces. They are owned by AUSTROVAPOR, are looked after by the “Club Blauer Blitz” in the Strasshof Railway Museum and, until 2009, could be chartered in any combination for special trips. Since 2016, the multiple unit has been available again in two parts for nostalgia trips after a partial repair.
Furthermore, the ÖGEG , the Austrian Society for Railway History , owns the 5145.009 with two intermediate cars and a control car. The set is located in the Upper Austrian Lokpark Ampflwang.
Others
