Public lavatory at Herner Strasse Bochum

Outhouse, built around 1912

The public lavatory on Herner Strasse in Bochum is a toilet block directly between the German Mining Museum and the Georg Agricola Technical University .

It was built around 1912 at the same time as the neighboring railway bridge as the result of an urban architectural competition made of brick . While the first public lavatories opened in Paris around 1790 and in London in 1852, the first wooden and cast iron facilities in Bochum preceded the stone construction from 1877 .

The building was in its original function until 1993. It was entered in the list of monuments on December 9, 1996 and extensively renovated . After a long period of vacancy, the municipal property was rented to the Portikus Förderverein eV . A portico describes a porch supported by columns and open to the sides, which is also featured in this building. The sanitary facilities and partition walls were removed, but the remaining lines and graffiti were preserved.

Since November 2010, regular art exhibitions have been held here under the label "Neonhalle".
