Ömer Altay Egesel

Ömer Altay Egesel (* 1913 in Susurluk ; † November 29, 1985 in Ankara ) was a Turkish lawyer and presiding judge in the 1st Criminal Senate of the Court of Cassation . In 1960, he was named chief prosecutor in the Yassıada Trials by the National Unity Committee.

Life

In 1937 Egesel graduated from Ankara University with a law degree . In the following years he worked as a judge and public prosecutor in various places.

After the military coup of May 27, 1960 , he was appointed a full member of the 1st Criminal Senate of the Court of Cassation in July 1960 and later by the Committee of National Unity as Attorney General and thus chief prosecutor in the Yassıada trials. In this position he called for the death penalty three times for former President Celâl Bayar and seven times for former Prime Minister Adnan Menderes . The death sentences against Menderes, Polatkan and Zorlu were carried out on September 16 and 17, 1961 on the island of İmralı .

In 1977 and 1978 Egesel held the post of presiding judge in the 1st criminal division of the Court of Cassation.
