Ömer Diler (* 1945 in Istanbul ; † March 18, 2005 ibid) was a Turkish numismatist .

Life

Ömer Diler was born the son of a drug manufacturer and studied chemical engineering . When his father died, his sons sold the factory and Ömer Diler was able to withdraw from his stake into private life. From then on he lived in Istanbul and Alanya .

numismatics

When Diler was given an Ottoman gold coin in 1972 , he became interested in numismatics. Accordingly, his first area of interest was the coins of the Ottomans. He was able to inspect thousands of gold , silver and copper coins before junk dealers melt them down. On the basis of this wealth of experience, he learned the knowledge of a numismatist, for example how to differentiate between real and counterfeit coins and how to recognize rare coins. His areas of interest soon expanded to include other areas of Islamic numismatics. He learned the Ottoman language and Arabic to read coins and built a growing library over the years. He dealt with coins of the Rum Seljuks , the Beyliks , the Ilkhan and also the Ottomans.

Shortly before finishing his two books on Ilkhan coins and mints of Islam, he died of lung cancer in Istanbul .

His publication Titles and Epithets of Islamic Towns is already considered a good reference book. His book Ilkhans - Coinage of the Persian Mongols , published posthumously by his wife Emine Nur Diler, Garo Kürkman and Johann-Christoph Hinrichs, is considered a thoroughly researched work on the 18 rulers of the Ilchane dynasty and the state of the Ilchane, which existed between 1255 and 1357 existed, as well as the coins of this Mongolian dynasty. In the book, 1676 coins of the dynasty are described and illustrated in detail. His book on Islamic mints was also published posthumously in 2009.
