Øerne

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Øerne ( Danish : "the islands" ) is a traditional and semi-official name for the Danish islands of Zealand , Fyn , Lolland , Falster , Møn and the associated smaller islands.

Next to Øerne are the traditional areas of Jutland and Bornholm , the latter despite its small area because of its remote location in the Baltic Sea.

The terms are often used in weather reports as well as in official statistics, legal texts and others. Until the amendment of the electoral law on the Folketing in the course of the 2007 municipal reform , Denmark was still divided into three electoral districts: Jutland , the islands (including Bornholm) and the capital ( Copenhagen and Frederiksberg ).

Today the scope of the term "islands" is no longer always understood in the same way by everyone. Bornholm is often included; sometimes the term "Funen and the Islands" or "Zealand and the Islands" is used, referring to the smaller islands that surround Funen and Zealand.

Historical predecessor of today's concepts were the medieval countries of Denmark . Culturally and linguistically, the islands have many features in common. The dialect group of the islands is classified as Ømål ( "island language (s)" ).
