Floods in North Korea in 2015

Heavy, torrential rains occurred in North Korea between August 22 and 23, 2015 . The northeast with the province of Hamgyŏng-pukto and the city of Rasŏn were particularly hard hit.

Course of events

From August 26, 2015 between 4:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m. ( Pyongyang time ) there was a precipitation of 250 mm, 155 mm fell between 4:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m. alone. This was caused by Typhoon Goni , which hit the Philippines and Japan before and killed at least 21 people.

Damage & Consequences

KCNA reported that 5,240 houses (the Nordbayerische Kurier reported 8,000 destroyed houses, citing government information), 99 public facilities, 51 Korean State Railways and at least one bridge were damaged or completely destroyed. According to other sources, 1,070 houses and 99 public buildings were damaged. According to the International Red Cross , more than 11,000 people had to leave their homes. It is believed that there were at least 40 victims. Several hundred foreign participants at a trade fair, including Germans, were temporarily stuck. The People's Republic of China sent trucks , forklifts and other equipment and vehicles to the region to help .

The North Korean web portal Naenara reported that as of August 31, 2015, over 1,000 apartments and 80 public buildings had been renovated. The Huchang - Sonbong section was reopened for rail traffic on September 2, 2015. Work is still ongoing between Chonghak and Sahoe .
